To say that ‘lots’ of people are going mental for Rebecca Black’s song, ‘Friday’ would be a bit of an understatement. At the time of writing, just over 66million people have viewed the official video on YouTube. I can’t really get my head around figures like that, it’s more than the population of the UK. (Although, probably not according Aberdeen rag, the Press & Journal, who last Saturday claimed that 250million people would be turning up to the anti-cuts protests…)
I’ve read the full story of how ‘Friday’ came to be, I’ve watched it, I’ve wondered if the people at Ark Music who made it intended it to be a serious song, I’ve sang along to it, I’ve had it stuck in my head whilst at work, I’ve had it stuck in my head whilst really ill in bed in the dark at 4am (which is a bleak, bleak feeling), but I still can’t really figure out why it has achieved the… success that it has. It’s not the worst song ever written and it isn’t the first time a child has had money thrown at them resulting in absolute rubbish being produced, so why is this now so huge?
It’s THE POWER OF THE INTERNET! It’s bewildering, but amazing.
I can’t help but wonder if Aaron Carter’s ‘Crazy Little Party Girl’ would have the same reaction if it was released these days.
Granted, it doesn’t teach us the valuable lesson of which day of the week follows which and it may be missing the autotune and the interjection of an ageing rappist, but it’s still got the terrible video, the inane lyrics and a child who can’t really sing brilliantly. Come on, internet, you love it.

Couldn’t agree more. You definitely struck a chord (haha!) with me on this one!
Hope you don’t mind my little joke,
